How would you diagnose Johnes Disease?

Difficult to diagnose as animals may have the disease but are not actively shedding.
For definite diagnosis a faecal culture is necessary but this can take up to 6 months.
Also you can check a blood sample for johnes antibody levels.

How do I treat Johnes Disease?

None – cull affected animals as they can be spreading the disease.

How can I prevent Johnes Disease?

Eradication programme – this can take years and involves strict biosecurity measures with all replacement heifers being reared completely seperatley to the main herd. Annual blood sampling can be used to determine which animals are clinically affected.

What is Cryptosporidosis?

Causes scour usually in calves 5 – 25 days old. It can be moderate to severs. Calves can become dehydrated very quickly.

What are the causes of Cryptosporidosis?

Cryptosporidium parvum. This can be shed from some cows in faeces, also already present in faecal matter on the farm.

Send a faecal sample to laboratory / vet for diagnosis.

Commonly a disease of young cattle (approx 1 month – 1 year old) although it can affect cattle of any age if immunocompromised.

What are the causes of Coccidiosis?

Eimeria Zeurnii, E. bovis and E. auburneusis.

How would you diagnose Coccidiosis?

Send a faecal sample to laboratory / vet for diagnosis. Diagnosis may also be made based on history and clinical signs.

All animals in any group showing symptoms will need treatment.
